Dead Cells Health Flask 5
When you commencement start playing Expressionless Cells, y'all may think information technology next to incommunicable. Like most roguelikes, a death will seemingly set you lot back to square ane, and that can exist pretty disheartening. But in actuality Dead Cells is much more approachable than nearly games in the genre, so long as yous know what you're doing. While you tin certainly find that out for yourself, we're more than than happy to take on some of that brunt with a handful of tips for beginners to enhance their skills.
EXPLAINING PROGRESSION
Fifty-fifty though you will start from the first level every time you dice in Dead Cells, at that place's quite a bit that carries forward from each playthrough, making future playthroughs much, much easier.
Commencement and foremost at that place are runes which unlock special, Metroidvania-esque abilities, letting you explore new areas. For more well-nigh runes and how to unlock them, check out our Dead Cells runes guide.
Another important aspect of progression: improvements and blueprints which you tin unlock by spending "cells" at the end of each level. Cells are those white things that pop out of enemies occasionally. Dying will make you lose all of them, merely at the terminate of each level, yous can make clean out your banking concern, spending to unlock a diverseness of things to help you lot in future journeys.
WHAT TO UNLOCK FIRST

You may feel overwhelmed by the options of where to spend cells when yous first reach the blueprint vendor. The answer is simple: General Improvements whenever possible. These are upgrades that will persist, granting yous healing potions, bonus golden and the power to recycle useless weapons for even more scratch. These unlocks are all upsides and will always exist benign.
Unfortunately yous can't but unlock every General Improvements right from the leap. Some of them require you lot unlock X number of items before yous can invest cells. And then yous'll need to start buying another things. Hither'south where the strategy comes in.
WHAT GEAR TO UNLOCK

As you're working to unlock your General Improvements, you'll demand to unlock some gear. These are essentially weapons similar swords, bows and traps that, once unlocked, will announced in the earth randomly.
When deciding what gear to unlock, read the descriptions carefully. Some of the gear is, frankly, kind of awful. The Spartan Boots, for example, cost simply v cells but they are almost universally bad and you'd merely as before long not have them in your item pool.
My advice: Focus on items with effects that are easy to pull off. The Infantry Bow grants disquisitional hits when y'all apply it close upward on enemies, whereas the Blood Sword always nets you bleeding damage. Ones to avert are things like The Impaler or the aforementioned Spartan Boots, which both have environmental demands that are far too inconsistent to count on.
All that said, if you stop upwardly unlocking something that you really don't bask using, information technology'southward not the end of the world. Y'all can ever recycle those worthless items for extra gilded equally you come upon them (so long every bit y'all've unlocked that full general comeback).

Outside of weapons, Mutations are also unlockable once you've found their blueprints. Mutations are neat in that they don't drib randomly. Once unlocked yous tin select them from a vendor between levels, which removes a lot of the randomness. Which mutations you adopt will vary on your playstyle. I usually focused on ones that decreased my power cooldowns, but it's really up to y'all.
TIPS FOR SURVIVAL
#1 - DON'T Rush
In that location are a number of means the game implies that you lot should be rushing through levels. The biggest are a series of doors that volition lock automatically once a certain amount of fourth dimension has past. Ignore these. It'south actually fine.
As you lot play more and get more familiar with the earlier levels you may find that you tin can zoom through things much quickier. But even so you're probably missing some of the nooks and crannies of the world, not to mention putting yourself in riskier scenarios. Taking your time will net yous more than cells and gear overall.
#2 - Change YOUR CONTROLS
Assuming you lot're playing Expressionless Cells with a controller (you should be), I highly recommend making a small change to the default control scheme. Specifically: bandy contrivance to the left bumper and put your wellness button on the far-correct face up push. The reason is that dodging is super important in Dead Cells and your finger should essentially be resting on the dodge push button at all times. Having to move your thumb over to a face up button slows things down and will admittedly result in a few unnecessary hits.
#three - Let THE TRAPS DO THE Piece of work
The easiest style to get deep into the later game of Dead Cells is to employ traps. There are a number of them in the game, only my early favorites are the Sinew Slicer and the Double Crossb-o-wmatic. These are auto-turrets that will burn down on whatever enemies in range once you drop them. Paired with cool-down enhancing mutations and yous tin can get these traps out every three or four seconds.
What'southward cool nigh traps is that you tin corruption enemy AI just dropping to the level an enemy is, leaving a few traps, and so retreating while they practice the work. Enemies will even target the traps, which makes them a overnice distraction tool.
Something to annotation, though: Traps require "power." All that means is that yous demand to exist somewhat close to a trap for it to fire. If yous're likewise far away yous'll encounter a little electricity bolt above the trap. Get a little bit closer and it'll first firing again. The range is pretty forgiving, though, and yous tin can definitely employ this to hide around corners as they do their work.
#four - READ Detail DESCRIPTIONS

It's commonly a condom bet to replace a rank iii crossbow with a rank 4 crossbow, merely make sure you lot read carefully earlier leaving a favorite piece of gear behind. Sure passive abilities of gear will yield unfortunate results, like increasing the damage you lot have past 100%. Yikes. Some of these passive perks are shown equally icons above your characters head, but they're never actually explained well, so if y'all're always stumped on why you lot're getting creamed, best to do some reading.
#v - INVEST IN THE BIG STUFF
I know it's tempting to unlock as many weapons as you lot can, only really consider focusing on some of the large ticket items in the shop equally they come up. Afterward upgrades to your health flask will cost hundreds and hundreds of cells, but they are absolutely worthwhile.
Some other case is a unique vendor that shows up after boss fights. They'll accept cells to increase the chance of getting a "+" rarity item. I know this doesn't mean much merely the easy answer is that + rarity (appended to the stop of an item's name) effectively increases that item by several levels, making a level 2 item into a level 4 item. Getting this percentage upwards will take a lot of time, but it's worth doing whenever you spot this specific vendor and it will make future playthroughs much easier.
With those things in heed, skilful luck in the muddied, muddy world of Dead Cells. Like any rogue-like it may seem downright impossible but if you spend the time (and the cells), y'all'll detect yourself the master of this world in no fourth dimension.
